Defense was the order of the day in Sunday’s game between the Wisconsin badgers and Xavier Musketeers at Boise, ID; neither team shot all that well – Xavier at 39.1% while Wisconsin shot a sickly 28.6% – yet Xavier managed to pull away in the second half as they held back Wisconsin 60-49 to advance to the Sweet 16.
The Badgers led 27-25 in what can safely be described as an ugly first half for both teams; however, the Musketeers went on a 13-4 run then would hang on with some clutch free throws along with defense even tighter than Wisconsin’s – if that was actually possible – to hang on for the victory.
B.J. Raymond led all Xavier scorers with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists while Derrick Brown added 10 with 4 rebounds and a steal. Wisconsin was led by Marcus Landry with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and a block while Trevon Hughes added 17 with 4 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals. Xavier plays again on Thursday when they face Pittsburgh.
