One thing that the San Antonio Spurs isn’t typically known for is prolonged losing streaks; prior to their game Tuesday night against the Golden State Warriors, they were suffering a rare two-game winning streak. And they certainly made the game entertaining and competitive, to say the least – bearing in mind the type of game that the Warriors like to employ. Nonetheless, Roger Mason, hit the game-winning basket with 23.8 seconds left, helping San Antonio edge Golden State 107-106 at AT&T Center.
Golden State, despite facing the NBA’s second-best defensive team, managed to go to their locker room ahead 54-52 and as expected, the third quarter onward was see-saw in nature. Monta Ellis hit a jumper to put the Warriors up 89-87 with just under 7 minutes remaining before the Spurs’ Tim Duncan scored to tie things up; both teams traded baskets before San Antonio went ahead when Tony Parker converted a 3-point play.
Another Parker layup with 3:30 to go increased the Spurs’ lead to six; with 33.9 seconds left, Kelenna Azubuike scored on a steal, giving Golden State a 106-105 edge. But Mason – at the top of the key- hit the game-winning basket for the Spurs with 23.8 seconds left in the contest.
San Antonio’s high scorer was Parker with 30 points, 3 rebounds and 10 assists while Mason added 24 (including three 3-pointers) with 2 rebounds and an assist; Duncan chipped in 21 with 10 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and 2 blocks.
Golden State was led by Ellis with 27 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal while Stephen Jackson added 18 with 8 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal. San Antonio (46-24) does not play again until Wednesday when they fly to Atlanta to take on the Hawks while Golden State (25-46) continues their Texas road trip when they visit Dallas to face the Mavericks – also on Wednesday night.
