Ellis’ 42 Trumps K-Mart’s 50; Warriors Edge Kings In OT 143-141

There is one definite truth about both the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings:  lots of offense and defense is an afterthought.  Perhaps this was best displayed on Wednesday night when both teams combined for 199 shot attempts and 94 free throw attempts; also factor in that the Warriors’ Monta Ellis and Kings’ Kevin Martin had career scoring nights and you had a barnburner at Oracle Arena.  Ellis scored 42 points as Golden State overcame Martin’s 50 and Sacramento 143-141 in overtime.

As expected, both teams provided plenty of offense as the Kings went into their locker room with a 76-67 lead; more of the same took place in the third as Golden State outscored Sacramento 43-30 in the third quarter, taking a 110-106 edge in the fourth quarter.  Beno Udrih sent the game into overtime when he scored on an uncontested court-length layup with 2.9 seconds left in regulation.

In the overtime period, Udrih hit a jumper and made a pair of free throws to put the Kings up 141-138, but a 3-point play by the Warriors’ Ellis tied things up at 141 with 42 seconds left; after both teams missed shots, Sacramento’s Jason Thompson fouled out and as a result, Golden State’s Ronny Turiaf made one of 2 free throws – icing the game for the Warriors.

Golden State had six players in double-digits, led by Ellis with a career-high 42 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals and a block while Kelenna Azubuike added 27 with 13 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block; Anthony Randolph chipped in 17 with 10 rebounds, an assist and a steal while Jamal Crawford and Anthony Morrow scored 15 each – with Crawford grabbing 3 rebounds, dishing out 7 assists along with 3 steals while Morrow grabbed 2 boards, dished out an assist along with a steal.

Meanwhile, Sacramento had 7 players score in double-digits, led by Martin with a career-high 50 points (including five 3-pointers), 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals while Francisco Garcia, from off the bench, added 22 (including 3 treys) with 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks; Udrih poured in 18 with 6 rebounds, 9 assists along with a steal while Thompson and Rashad McCants chipped in 14 apiece – with Thompson grabbing 19 rebounds, dished out an assist along with 2 steals and 2 blocks while McCants grabbed 4 boards, dished out 3 assists along with a steal.  Golden State (26-49) plays again on Friday when they host the New Orleans Hornets while Sacramento (16-58) flies to Phoenix to take on the Suns – also on Friday night.
