They say sometimes the best trades are the ones that you don’t make. According to reports that emanate out of Memphis a near deal almost took place in the Association earlier this season that both teams involved would most likely have come to regret.

Friday the “Memphis Commercial Appeal” reported of an aborted deal that the Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns were trying to complete but would fall apart. If the deal was consummated it would have been a radical make-over of both teams however not necessarily for the better.

The reports state that the Suns had wanted to send All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire to Memphis in exchange for Rudy Gay, Hakim Warrick, Mike Conley and a number one pick. Memphis tried to renegotiate the deal giving up less big name talent but alleviating salary cap restraints that Phoenix has. The deal of course never happened, and most likely for both teams it is a good thing.

Gizzlies interim coach Lionel Hollins told reporters he was glad the deal did not go down. Hollins said “I was definitely against it. I like Amare Stoudemire. But with what the Grizzlies had to give up, there wouldn’t have been anything left for Amare to play with. My questions were would he be happy and would he stay? It wouldn’t have been pleasant trying to coach a guy who didn’t want to be here.”

In this longtime NBA observers opinion the deal would have been a lose/lose on all ends. How Gay,Warrick and Conley would fit in the Phoenix situation is hard to gauge but it would have thrown off the chemistry. And Stoudemire is superb but he needs a cast around him.

Memphis would  have been right back to where they were after they got rid of Pau Gasol last year if they made the trade. Instead Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace did the right thing this time. Wallace after seeing his name last year mostly as alternate meaning of being incompetent has helped the Grizzlies get on what looks like has gotten his club going in the right direction.
