I have no idea what happened to the San Antonio Spurs during this postseason. One can say that they simply couldn’t shoot the ball during the series – which was actually true – while an argument can be made about the team’s age.
Truth be told, the Spurs are a bit long in the tooth. In Tuesday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks at AT&T Center, you couldn’t really pinpoint an exact reason because both teams shot over 50% (Dallas at 51.4% and San Antonio at 52%) yet the Spurs didn’t really put up much of a fight. The end result? As probably expected, Dallas made short work of San Antonio, prevailing 106-93, sending the Mavericks to the second round to face the winner of the Denver-New Orleans (probably Denver) series.
Basically it was the beginning of the end for San Antonio as Dallas’ Josh Howard hit a clutch 3-pointer with 4:20 left in the third quarter; Jason Kidd drained a trey of his own in which the momentum carried into the fourth quarter. The Mavericks put the issue to rest early in the fourth quarter.
Dallas’ high scorer was Nowitzki with 31 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal while Jason Terry added 19 (including three 3-pointers) from off the bench with 2 rebounds and 4 assists; Howard chipped in 17 with 8 rebounds, an assist, 3 steals and a block while Erick Dampier notched a double-double as he scored 11 with 12 boards.
San Antonio had only two players in double-digits, led by Tim Duncan with 30 points, 8 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block while Tony Parker added 26 with 4 rebounds and 12 assists but turning the ball over 7 times. Dallas will have a few days to rest as they await the winner of the Denver-New Orleans series.
