Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony

1994.  Remember that date, folks.  Why you ask?  For those of you who may be NBA historians, then you know that the last time that the Denver Nuggets won a playoff series was during the 1994 season.  Having said that, the Nuggets hoped to break that long streak in their game Wednesday night against the New Orleans Hornets at Pepsi Center.  As has been the custom during this series, the Hornets didn’t shoot very well (38%) while the Nuggets did (51%); the end result was predictable as Denver ousted New Orleans from the Western Conference playoffs by the score of 107-86.

New Orleans actually did well early on as they turned a 16-2 run into a 25-16 lead; however, Denver responded with 8 unanswered points.  Unlike the previous games in this series, the Hornets managed to hang with the Nuggets as both teams went to their respective locker rooms tied at 49 at halftime.  The second half was all Denver as they exploited New Orleans frontcourt with several runs, with the end result being the predictable one – a Nuggets victory.

Denver’s high scorer was Carmelo Anthony with 34 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals while J.R. Smith added 20 (including five treys) from off the bench with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal; Kenyon Martin poured in 15 with 7 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block while Chauncey Billups notched a double-double as he scored 13 (including three 3-pointers) with 5 rebounds, 11 assists and a steal.

New Orleans was led by David West with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals while James Posey added 18 with 3 rebounds and an assist; Chris Paul earned a double-double, scoring 12 with 6 rebounds, 10 assists and 3 steals.  Denver – with the series win – will take on the Dallas Mavericks, series winners over the San Antonio Spurs.
