By and large, the margin for the Denver Nuggets’ victories up to Saturday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks has been double-digits.  This particular game had its highs and lows for both teams but it took a controversial 3-point basket made by Carmelo Anthony to help Denver escape American Airlines Center with the 106-103 win.

Both teams could never really pull away at any part of the first half as Denver took to their locker room a narrow 48-45 lead; Dallas would slowly chip away at the nuggets and finally hit the glass ceiling when they entered the fourth quarter with a one-point lead.  Oddly enough, despite missing 15 of their first 17 shot attempts, the Nuggets found themselves trailing by 105-101 with just 31 seconds left in the game.

Anthony scored on a quick dunk, then Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki missed a 13-footer that the Nuggets rebounded and would call an immediate timeout.  Anthony took the inbounds pass while the Mavericks’ Antoine Wright tried to foul Anthony twice, since they had a foul to give.  Anthony would initially fumble his dribble but bounced off the second bump and found himself wide open; he would drain the 3-pointer with one second remaining on the game clock.  The Dallas bench went crazy, pointing out the “foul” that the referees did not spot.  Nowitzki missed a desperate heave, helping the Nuggets escape.

Denver’s high scorer was Billups with 32 points (including three 3-pointers), 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a block while Anthony added 31 with 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block.  Dallas was led by Nowitzki with 33 points, 16 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks while Jason Terry added 17 with 4 rebounds and an assist; Brandon Bass, off the bench, chipped in 16 with 5 rebounds and an assist.  Denver, with the win, takes a commanding 3-0 series advantage into American Airlines Center on Monday as they look to eliminate these same Dallas Mavericks.
