Knicks Acquire Lakers 1st Round Pick

New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers

Good thing that the Los Angeles Lakers have picks in the second round of the 2009 NBA draft; on Thursday, the NBA champs sold their #29 pick to the New York Knicks for $3,000,000, according to ESPN’s Andy Katz; the transaction was verified by sources close to both teams.

With the trade now complete, the Lakers have just the 42nd and 59th picks of the second round available to them.  Los Angeles is in the hopes of re-signing forward Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom and guard Shannon Brown – all of who become unrestricted free agents on July 1.

If successful, that would bring their roster to the league-mandated number of 13, which makes it unlikely that they would add another player to their roster.  But again, that’s assuming they’re successful.  I will assume that the Lakers will select a point guard with their #42 being mindful that Derek Fisher is 35 years old and has a short shelf life, so to speak.
