Why The Cavaliers Are Trying To Land Moon

The signing of small forward Jamario Moon by the Cavaliers to an offer sheet came totally out of left field on each and every side. The Cavaliers did a great job keeping the move quiet until the Heat suddenly had an offer sheet in front of them for Moon. It’s a great offensive move by Danny Ferry and the club to try and get a defensive player.

Now, Moon is not going to be a starter on this team, and if the Cavaliers land him, he’ll add size and a defensive presence to the club. He’s had already an interesting career playing in a number of places, including his two pro stops in Toronto and Miami.

As far as the Heat go, they are still focused on landing Carlos Boozer and possibly Lakers free agent forward Lamar Odom. Miami currently has three options at the small forward spot – James Jones, Yakhouba Diawara and Dorell Wright, and possibly Odom if they get him. They also have 08 first-round pick Michael Beasley, who has been playing small forward this summer.

So will the Heat match what likely is a two-year deal for Moon? Probably not, meaning that in a week, he’ll officially join the Cavs roster. Another reason they probably won’t match the deal is that they then could not Moon in trades until mid-December, and then only with his permission for the next year.

It’s an interesting move by the Cavaliers, who also still have a great interest in Matt Barnes, and maybe even a couple other players they were talking to, including Rob Kurz and maybe even Drew Gooden. Bottom line though, this is a move that helps them, and hurts the Heat, so it makes sense.
