The New York Knicks are in a position that just about every NBA club would love to be in: cash-rich and in a position to pluck some high-profile free agents.
Current Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson – either by himself or through his agent – have to be aware of that fact. Nonetheless, because Johnson has made his intentions known about not re-upping with the Hawks when his current contract expires after this season, there is the distinct possibility that Johnson could possibly sign with the Knicks should their pursuit of either LeBron James, Chris Bosh or Dwyane Wade be unsuccessful, according to the New York Post.
Fortunately for Johnson and possibly Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni, they have a history together as Johnson played for him while a member of the Phoenix Suns for two seasons and is familiar with the run-and-gun style which is D’Antoni’s modus operandi.
According to Johnson:
“My sole focus right now is on this team and what we’re trying to accomplish this season. I have some goals set for this season for my team and I have some individual goals set for myself as well. I really feel like this team is ready to take that step to the next level. I also feel like I can be one of the elite players in this league, I feel like I’m right there, so it’s going to be an exciting year.”
Let’s assume for the sake of the conversation that Johnson signs with the Knicks. Because of the familiarity factor alone, Johnson would be a good fit. Not to mention that the run-and-gun style would complement Johnson’s style of play as run-and-gun really isn’t en vogue down in Atlanta.
What is curious to me, however, is why he would turn down a 4-year, $60 million contract extension with a club that obviously has an upside as opposed to a club (the Knicks) that wouldn’t know continuity if it bit them in the butt. I’m just sayin’.
