Finally, after two consecutive absences (covering two days), Cleveland Caveliers guard Delonte West finally returned to team practice. And according to Mary Schmitt Boyer at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the team was pleased and relieved to have his presence on the court.
Although the Cavs are happy by his return, bear in mind that all of his absences (four in total) are of the unauthorized variety, which means he will probably be fined for his actions. This latest episode is just a small part of West and his struggles with mental illness – specifically the fact that according to West, he has been diagnosed as being bi-polar.
Monday also found West, while in attendance at Media Day, informing reporters that he was back on a regular routine – including taking his medication. Then he proceeded to go AWOL, not returning until Thursday. According to Cavs head coach Mike Brown, West went through the entire practice with no restrictions while adding that West should be available for the team’s Wine and Gold Scrimmage, which takes place on Saturday at the University of Akron.
This is one of those times that I am glad not to be a NBA general manager, especially in this case Danny Ferry. Firstly, we’re dealing with a player who is suffering from a mental disorder as opposed to some run-of-the-mill physical ailment. As such, obviously you probably, to some degree, have to handle the player with kid gloves.
At the same time, I do question the medical staff of the previous teams that West played for either not disclosing West’s bipolar condition (assuming that is the case) or the Cavaliers’ taking on such a risk. Don’t get me wrong – West is very talented; however, his “condition” could very well be one of those risks that may outweigh any possible rewards the team hopes to reap.
But regardless, Ferry will address West’s situation on Saturday; when more specifics become available, Slam Dunk Central will bring them to you.
