Andrew Bynum – injured. Pau Gasol – injured, as well. Not a good scenario for the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers as they look to repeat. While it is a big deal of sorts that Bynum is out, it may prove to be a bigger deal as according to Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times, Gasol could possibly miss the team’s season opener next Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Gasol went through a light practice on Wednesday; however, he felt pain in his hamstring on Thursdaymornign. As a result, Gasol missed an exhibition game Thursday and has been ruled out of Friday’s game against the Denver Nuggets; all told, he has missed the Lakers’ last six exhibition games.

Curiously enough, team coach Phil Jackson – in front of the media anways – seems not to be worried. Phil, a piece of advice – perhaps you should be. While Lamar Odom would take Gasol’s place in the lineup, the center position is in limbo. I don’t know if I would sleep well at knowing that the Lakers’ starting center on opening night could be DJ Mbenga.

For Los Angeles’ sake, they should hope and pray that Gasol’s injury is relatively minor as Kobe Bryant cannot do it all by himself. And knowing that Mbenga may start at center is a disconcerting thought.
