Kings’ Jackson To Announce Retirement

You know you’re headed for an NBA retirement when you’re a free agent and no NBA team takes a flyer on you. Not one single team. Some players would opt to go overseas and play until the NBA becomes interested again. In the case of Bobby Jackson, the decision was one that was cut and dried.

According to Sam Amick of The Sacramento Bee, he is expected to arrive at Arco Arena Friday to announce his retirement from the Kings after a 12-year career; he is expected to join the Kings’ front office in a yet-to-be-determined capacity. Interestingly enough, an injury suffered during a pickup game of basketball hastened Jackson’s decision.

Jackson’s take on his announcement?

”As a player, that’s what you get questioned on: ‘Do you think he’ll want to play a lot of minutes? Will he be (OK) being a third guard? Is his body going to hold up? You hear all those things, and you’re thinking, ‘Man, if they’re saying that now, what are they going to say next year?’ (The thumb injury) came into play. That made it a little bit easier decision for me.”

One thing is for certain – Jackson is one smart individual. And he displayed those smarts as he was one of the top reserve guards in the league for seven teams. And you can rest assured that he will do just fine in his next gig in the Kings’ front office.

During his 12-year career, Jackson averaged 9.7 PPG, 3.1 RPG and 2.6 APG, with his best year being with the Kings during the 2002-03 campaign. During that span, he averaged 15.2 PPG, 3.7 RPG and 3.1 APG in 28 minutes per game (59 games).
