The Sacramento Kings still have a glimmer of hope for a proposed new basketball arena at Cal Expo as according to Tony Bizjak of the Sacramento Bee, Cal Expo officials on Friday extended their agreement with the NBA to continue working on plans for the proposed arena and new fairgrounds on the Cal Expo property.
As it were, the current “letter of understanding” was set to expire next month, but the NBA requested – and received – a six-month extension. The concept that developers have in mind for the Cal Expo property was for an arena for the Kings, a modern fairgrounds and opening up the remainder of the Cal Expo property for redevelopment as a mixed-use community.
For selfish reasons, I would prefer that they they choose Cal Expo as the Kings next home; I will be moving to a new place which would be about 10 minutes from Cal Expo. Because of that, that would be preferable to the secondary location that Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson has in mind – the rail yards just north of downtown.
Pluses for the Cal Expo site include: tons more parking than over at the rail yard location, no additional roads would have to be built and Cal Expo has been in need of a makeover for the longest time. I can only hope that the Maloofs continue to exercise patience while this study continues. They will be rewarded nicely, as a result.
