The term “small rupture of a disc” is quite similar to being “a little bit pregnant“; in other words it is one way or another. No your humble reporter is not a qualified doctor or surgeon; however after undergoing two separate disc replacement surgeries I do have experience on this subject. The “Associated Press” has reported that Detroit Pistons starting forward Tayshaun Prince is out indefinitely with what the team has labeled as a small rupture of a disc in his lower back.

Reports are that Prince is receiving treatments and that he is out indefinitely. As someone who has gone through the joy of having three ruptured discs this reporter can tell you that a ruptured disc can not repair itself. It is not like a bone that will knit itself back together. The team’s doctors may be able to eliminate the pain however surgery is the only solution to fixing the problem.

Prince is relatively lucky; lower back surgery is far less complicated and takes far less time to recuperate from than surgery in the upper portions of the spine. T.J. Ford point guard for the Indiana Pacers as well as this reporter went through that experience and recovery time is far more lengthy and arduous. The 29 year old forward is now in his eighth season in the Association and has played for the Pistons his entire career.
