Abdul-Jabbar Diagnosed With Leukemia

A bit of somber news to report this morning as according to the Associated Press, NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is being treated for a rare form of leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia – a condition that was diagnosed back in December 2008.

Currently, Abdul-Jabbar is taking an oral medication for the malady and is being proactive about minimizing its effects. He, like fellow Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson, wants to bring awareness about his condition, with Abdul-Jabbar adding:

“I’ve never been a person to share my private life. But I can help save lives. It’s incumbent on someone like me to talk about this.”

According to his doctor, he didn’t issue any guarantees, but told Abdul-Jabbar:

“You have a very good chance to live your life out and not have to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle.”

We at Slam Dunk Central hope that Kareem can continue to live a full and beneficial life despite the malady. Our prayers go out to him.
