This reporter covered the Cleveland Cavaliers and the NBA as a radio reporter from 1995-2006 and the NBA Finals in 2007. During all that time meeting the greatest legends of that era from Michael Jordan on down not one player ever impressed me more than for Cavaliers point guard Earl Boykins did. “MIGHTY MITE” was on his second stint with Cleveland in the 1999-2000 season and the team was in the midst of a simply terrible campaign. Late in the season the Cavaliers played the Los Angeles Lakers at what was then known as Gund Arena in Cleveland.

Although the Cavaliers had long been eliminated from any chance of making the Post Season they played the Lakers tough that night with the game in doubt until Los Angeles won the game in the end. Although they had nothing to celebrate for the first time in quite a while the team did not have to walk off the court hanging their heads in shame.

When the media was allowed into the locker room I asked three different players the same question; even though they had lost was the game a “Moral Victory” for the team. I truly do not remember who the first two players I asked the question to but they both agreed with the premise. They both talked about how it showed that the Cavaliers had not quit on the season and they had played an elite team tough.

I then went over to Boykins and asked him the same question. He was not angry or upset but he was not taking any positives out of that game. I can remember Earl Boykins face as if it were yesterday when he responded with “There are no “Moral Victories” in the NBA.”

That comment showed me that at 5′5″ tall Earl Boykins was as tough as any player I have ever met in the Association. I never would ask that question to another athlete. In fact from that point on I would phrase my question; that even though there are no “Moral Victories” in the NBA can you point out any positives from this loss?

The “Associated Press” has reported that the Washington Wizards have signed the Free Agent point guard to their roster to help with their severely depleted roster. The Wizards are without guards Javaris Crittenton, Randy Foye and Mike James due to injuries.

Boykins last season played for Euro-League powerhouse Virtus Bologna in Italy and averaged almost 15 points per game. This will be the ninth team that Boykins has played for in the NBA. Rhere have been many teams who have not taken a chance on Boykins because of his size. If they knew the size of his heart they might possibly feel differently.
