It isn’t very often that a team takes the lead at the tip-off and hangs onto the same lead for 48 minutes, yet that incident happened at FedEx Forum Monday night when the Sacramento Kings took on the Memphis Grizzlies. While both teams shot well (Sacramento at 49.4% and Memphis at 53.9%), it was the Grizzlies who went to the free throw line much more than the Kings (42 vs. 23) which allowed them to maintain a lead throughout the game. The end result? Memphis easily disposed of Sacramento 116-105.

The Grizzlies took a double-digit lead at 25-12 on a Zach Randolph layup with 2:00 left in the first quarter, but four free throws by Tyreke Evans combined with a basket by Omri Casspi helped the Kings narrow Memphis’ lead to 25-18. The offense picked up for both teams as O.J. Mayo hit a pair of free throws, giving the Grizzlies a double-digit lead at 38-28; a Casspi dunk with 1:28 left in the half put Sacramento within 54-48, but a Rudy Gay jumper gave Memphis a 60-50 halftime lead.

They would extend their lead to 86-69 in the third quarter; however, the Kings were able to chip away and use an 11-4 run to make it 103-94, but Gay answered back with a three-pointer and Mayo added a jumper to put the game away.

Gay led Memphis with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block while Mayo added 20 with 5 rebounds and 2 assists; Marc Gasol chipped in 18 with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 4 blocks while Randolph scored 16 with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Evans led the Kings with 28 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal while Sergio Rodriguez added 16 with 7 assists; Casspi chipped in 15 with 3 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals. Memphis (5-9) plays again on Wednesday when they travel to Phoenix to take on the Suns while Sacramento (5-8) returns home to host the New York Knicks – also on Wednesday night.
