Just a quick note to pass along; according to The Sporting News, Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin passed away today at the age of 85.
Pollin bought the team back in 1964 when they were known as the Baltimore Bullets; he would subsequently move the team to Washington, D.C.. He would also change the team’s name from the Bullets to the Wizards in cognizance of the negative connotations associated with the franchise’s former name.
He and his wife Irene were majority owners of Washington Sports & Entertainment Limited Partnership, which also oversaw the operations of the Washington Wizards and the Verizon Center. In addition to his business endeavors, Pollin was also known for his philanthropic work as The Pollin Award has been awarded annually since 2002; awardees are chosen based on their dedication to the Washington, D.C. community and the impact they have on it.
We at Slam Dunk Central offer our most sincere condolences and prayers to the immediate Pollin family.
