Celtics Slip Past Under-Staffed Sixers 113-110

They say that a wounded animal is at it’s most dangerous state and that certainly applied to the Philadelphia 76ers as they faced the Boston Celtics Wednesday night at the “New Garden.“ The Sixers were without two of their starters guard Louis Williams and forward Elton Brand yet still were within one point of Boston with 2 seconds left in the game. However Sixers guard Royal Ivey fouled Boston reserve Eddie House who proceeded to knock down two at the stripe and the Celtics held on to win 113-110.
Boston had six players in double figures led by Paul Pierce with a game high 27 points while Philadelphia guard Andre Iguodala just missed a triple-double as he led his team with 25 points, 9 assists and 9 rebounds. The 76ers lost Louis Williams due to a broken jaw that he sustained Tuesday night as his team lost to the Wizards. The Sixers starting point guard will be evaluated Thursday to determine how much action he will miss. Brand did not play due to a sore right hamstring.
This was a close contest all night as the two opponents jockeyed for position throughout the game. The Celtics would have the advantage at the end of the first as they led 27-23. The two rivals were even closer as they walked into the locker room at the half with Philadelphia on top 52-51.
The lead kept going back and forth in the third until with 1:21 veteran Jason Kapono broke a tie game with a trey giving Philadelphia an 80-77 advantage. They would double their advantage by the end of the period as they led 85-79 heading into the fourth.
The Celtics started off the quarter on an 11-2 run and Rasheed Wallace knocked down a trey with 9:23 to play giving his club the lead at 90-87. Boston looked like they were about to run away with this game as Marquis Daniels drove to the lane putting the ball up and in with 5:39 to play and the “Green Team” led 102-92. Philadelphia went on a 19-8 run to be within a point of the Celtics however the foul by Ivey was enough to secure Boston the win.
The Celtics’ Paul Pierce led all players with 27 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal while Kevin Garnett added 19 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds. Ray Allen had 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal while Eddie House coming off the pine put up 13 points, 1 assist and 1 rebound. Kendrick Perkins scored 12 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 steal while Rajon Rondo added 10 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
Andre Iguodala just missed recording a triple-double as he led the Sixers with 25 points, 9 assists, 9 rebounds and 1 steal while Jason Kapono had 20 points off the bench, 1 assist and 1 rebound. Willie Green came off the bench for Philadelphia with 18 points, while Thaddeus Young scored 17 more and Jrue Holiday would add 10 points in the defeat. Boston now improves to 11-4 they will host the Toronto Raptors on Friday while Philadelphia falls to 5-10 and will be in Atlanta Friday to play the Hawks.
