The Portland Trail Blazers  defeated the Houston Rockets Saturday night at the Rose Garden by a final score of 90-89 but the victory was an after thought as the club has once again lost starting center Greg Oden for the rest of the season. The number one selection in the 2007 NBA Draft fractured his left kneecap in the first quarter as he was trying to guard Rockets point guard Aaron Brooks.

The Rockets center hit the hardwood writhing in pain and holding his left knee. He had to be taken from the court via stretcher and a Blazers spokesperson revealed after the game that Oden would require surgery and was expected to miss the rest of the campaign.

The former Ohio State player missed his entire rookie season after injuring his right knee in training camp and requiring micro-fracture surgery. Last season Oden would miss 21 games during the campaign due to injury however he vowed to reporters that this season was going to show the Association what he was capable of. Through the first 20 games of the season Oden averaged 11.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game and for fans of the Blazers it is once again “Wait For Next Year.”

Portland All-Star Brandon Roy would have a game high 28 points including the game winning hoop while Andre Miller came off the bench with 24 more. Carl Landry would come off of the pine for the Rockets and lead them with 23 points in the loss. The game was tight all night long as the contest would not be determined until B-Roy would drive the lane putting the ball up and in with 3 seconds  to play to clinch the victory for Portland.

Needless to say even though the contest  would not be decided until the closing seconds the Portland crowd seemed preoccupied after the injury to Oden. Portland has a lot of weapons including their two stars Roy and forward LaMarcus Aldridge however if Oden could stay healthy for an extended period of time he could turn into a game changer for the Blazers.

After seeing their man in the middle lost for the season for the second time in three years there will be at the very least lots of second guessing going on for the rest of this campaign as to whether the team made a wise choice in going with the talented  but injury prone player.

Portland improves to 13-8 with the victory and will travel to New York to play the Knicks on Monday while Houston falls to 11-9 and will host the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday.
