38-Point Third Quarter Helps Jazz Beat Magic 120-111

The Utah Jazz had just returned from an embarrassing loss one night ago to the Los Angeles Lakers before regrouping to host the Orlando Magic Thursday night. The first and second quarters seemed to mirror last night’s effort, but they woke up by exploding for 38 third quarter points; the offensive explosion allowed Utah to convincingly defeat Orlando 120-111 at Energy Solutions Arena.

The Magic managed to catch a break in the first half as the Jazz could only make 10 of 22 free throws, but Utah got to within eight at halftime. They would open the third quarter with a 14-3 run as Deron Williams had 11 points and eight assists in the period and ended it with a trey with a second left, giving Utah a 90-81 lead. C.J. Miles’ jumper gave the Jazz a 15-point lead at 5:56 left in the game before they took a timeout a minute later. Orlando managed to get to within eight at 109-101 with 1:59 remaining, but consecutive baskets by Miles iced the game for Utah at the 1:02 mark of the final period.

Williams led the Jazz with 32 points, 8 rebounds, 15 assists and a steal while Miles came off the bench to add 22 (including three treys) with 2 assists and a steal; Carlos Boozer pitched in 20 with14 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and a block while Mehmet Okur notched a double, scoring 14 with 11 rebounds. Vince Carter led the Magic with 34 points (including 5 three-pointers), 6 rebounds and 3 assists while Dwight Howard added 18 with 10 rebounds, an assist, a steal and 2 blocks; Matt Barnes chipped in 17 with 5 rebounds and 2 assists while Ryan Anderson scored 16 (including 4 treys) with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Utah (13-9) plays again on Saturday when they host the Los Angeles Lakers while Orlando (17-5) travels to Phoenix to take on the Suns Friday.
