Darko To Give Up NBA Dream At End Of Season
Posted by Jeff Sack under Commentary, NBA Analysis

The cruelest word in the English language may be the word “Potential.” At best you may be able to fulfill it; you shall never exceed it and most folks who are labeled with it fall far short of it. Think back to how many baseball players were hailed as the “Next Mickey Mantle.” Or NBA players being held up as the “Next Michael Jordan” yet not one player has ever come close to matching those players feats.
Back in the Summer of 2003 NBA observers were obsessed with a young player from Serbia by the name of Darko Milicic. In fact the Detroit Pistons were so intrigued with Milicic that they bypassed Carmelo Anthony with the second pick in the NBA Draft and chose him instead. But instead of Darko fulfilling the expectations of the Pistons and NBA observers his game has never transferred over successfully to the Association. And he has finally decided that the NBA is not for him.
The “New York Post” Thursday reported that the 7′1″ player now with the New York Knicks has told the paper that this will be his final season in the NBA. Milicic told reporters “Whatever happens, I’m going back next year. It’s 100-percent certain. I have to be real and not lie. I’m not going to get it done in the NBA. I’m not going to get another opportunity and there’s nothing wrong with going back to Europe. I don’t want to create a bad atmosphere here, but it’s not working in the NBA.”
This was not the way things were supposed to work out for this young man who so many had predicted stardom for. However he will head back home with a broken heart and dashed dreams. Was he not as talented as everyone originally believed or was it that he sat and stagnated on the Pistons bench under Larry Brown? We shall never know for sure but alas one more young man ends his tour of duty in the NBA without fulfilling his “Potential.”
