The Indiana Pacers, during their visit to American Airlines Arena Sunday, had a formidable task at hand, which was to cool off the surging Miami Heat. Suffice it to say, the mission was not accomplished. The Pacers did just everything wrong, including 18 turnovers, 31% shooting and only 64% from the charity stripe. Nothing went right for them and the Heat took full advantage of the miscues; balanced scoring was the rule as Miami embarrassed Indiana 114-80.
Indiana scored the game’s first point, which was significant because the Heat led wire-to-wire in the first meeting between the teams this season. After that, though, it was all Miami — the Heat led 17-3 before Indiana got a stop, and were up 34-12 with 2:38 left in the opening period, with Jermaine O’Neal making all four of his shots. Michael Beasley’s dunk with 6:42 left in the half put Miami up 40-29 and the lead was never in doubt again. Dwyane Wade had 11 points in the quarter while Indiana missed 15 of its final 19 shots of the half.
Interestingly enough, the Pacers – namely Tyler Hansbrough – made the NBA record books; Hansbrough became the first player since Andre Miller back on November 28, 2005 to have a double-double without making a basket, according to STATS LLC. Hansbrough went 0-for-5 yet managed to go 10-for-10 from the free throw line while grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Heat was led by Wade with 25 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and a block while O’Neal added 19 with 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a block; Beasley scored 16 with 5 rebounds and an assist. The Pacers’ high scorer was Troy Murphy with 16 points, 2 rebounds, an assist and a steal while the aforementioned Hansbrough and T.J. Ford scored 10 each – with Hansbrough grabbing 10 rebounds, dishing out an assist along with a steal and a block while Ford dished out 4 assists.
Miami (16-12) plays again on Wednesday when they travel to the Big Easy to take on the New Orleans Hornets while Indiana (9-20) flies to Chicago to face the Bulls on Tuesday.
