Steve Nash (#13)

The Phoenix Suns, as of late, have had this little issue dogging them. The issue in question? Gaining big leads just to lose them – twice during their current seven-game road trip. One would ask if they have learned anything from the road trip at all.

During Tuesday night’s game against the Sacramento Kings at Arco Arena, the Suns had a struggle of sorts as they did have a 20-point lead at one point. Yet the Kings did scratch their way within sniffing distance of the lead, but Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire provided offense late, enabling Phoenix to hold off Sacramento 113-109.

Leandro Barbosa banked in a 3-pointer from about 35 feet with 0.1 seconds left in the quarter to give the Suns a 34-25 lead. Phoenix expanded the lead in the second quarter, going on a 17-1 run that made it 60-40. But Sacramento cut the lead to 63-49 at the break. Beno Udrih tied the game for Sacramento at 103 with a tough jumper with 1:49 remaining. After the teams traded turnovers, Amare Stoudemire got the lead back for the Suns with two free throws with 1:10 to go.

The Kings missed three shots right at the rim on the next possession, including two by Tyreke Evans. Steve Nash gave Phoenix control with a jumper that made it 107-103 with 44.5 seconds to go. Stoudemire’s jumper restored the four-point lead and Nash hit four free throws in the closing seconds to ice the game.

Nash led the Suns with 30 points, 3 rebounds, 12 assists and a block while Stoudemire added 24 with 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks; Jason Richardson chipped in 20 with 9 rebounds and 2 assists while Channing Frye scored 17 with 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

The Kings were led by Evans with 27 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and a block while Omri Casspi put in 24  (including three treys) with 7 rebounds and an assist; Andres Nocioni added 19 from off the bench with 2 rebounds, a steal and a block while Jason Thompson notched a double-double, scoring 14 with 10 boards.

Phoenix (22-13) plays again on Wednesday when they have a three-game homestand, hosting the Houston Rockets while Sacramento (14-20) makes the short trip to Oakland to take on the Golden State Warriors on Friday.
