Kings End Seven-Game Skid, Hold Off Warriors 99-96

Tyreke Evans (#13)

Anyone who has followed the Sacramento Kings already know that they were overachieving for the season’s first 30 games, then began a free fall which saw them lose 12 of 13, prior to their game Tuesday night against the Golden State Warriors at Arco Arena.

Neither team shot very well as both teams shot south of 40%; the run-and-gun wasn’t working for either team, obviously. But the duo of Tyreke Evans and Beno Udrih saved the day for the Kings, combining for 47 points and helping Sacramento fend off Golden State Warriors 99-96.

The first quarter was relatively tight yet the Kings managed to build a 5-point lead on a Udrih jumper with 28 seconds left in the opening period. Sacramento would build their lead up to 16 on a pair of free throws by Udrih with 6:09 left in the half; an Evans layup put the Kings ahead 49-28, but a 10-0 burst allowed Golden State to get within 49-38 at the half.

An Anthony Tolliver jumper put the Warriors to within eight at 49-43 but the Kings would rebuild their lead back up to 16 on a Sean May free throw with 4:58 left in the third quarter. Sacramento would go into the final period up by 13. The Warriors would gradually chip away at the Kings’ lead and Stephen Curry was fouled making a three-point basket; he would make the free throw.

A pair of free throws by Corey Maggette would cut Sacramento’s lead to 92-88 with 2:20 left in the game. After Cartier Martin cut the lead to 94-92 with 24 seconds left on the game clock, Udrih sealed the win for Sacramento with five free throws in the last 20.5 seconds of the game.

Udrih led all Kings scorers with 24 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals while Evans added 23 with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals; Spencer Hawes was solid, scoring 18 with 13 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 blocks.

The Warriors were led by Curry with 27 points (including three treys), 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals while Martin added 20 with 7 rebounds, an assist and a steal; Maggette, despite shooting 3-of-22 from the floor, chipped in 19 with 12 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals.

Sacramento (16-28) plays again on Friday when they fly to Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Jazz while Golden State (13-30) return home to host the New Orleans Hornets Wednesday night.
