Friday night’s game between the Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena was rather competitive, from start to finish. But perhaps the turning point of the contest was late in the fourth quarter.
Jason Kidd was dribbling down the left sideline with 1:37 left in the fourth quarter when Hawks coach Mike Woodson took his time removing himself from the floor during play. Kidd collided with Woodson, which earned the coach a technical. The Mavericks fed on that and outscored the Hawks 12-4 in overtime while earning the 111-103 win.
Jamal Crawford of the Hawks hit a pair of free throws with 8:23 left in the fourth quarter to make it 86-71 for the game’s biggest lead, but Kidd would loom large for te Mavericks as he had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in the last 4:53 of regulation. With just 1:37 remaining in the fourth period, Kidd bumped into Woodson after the Atlanta coach took too long to step off the court as the Mavericks guard was dribbling near the left sideline.
Lead official Mark Wunderlich quickly called timeout, cleared the players from the floor and brought Dallas coach to talk to Woodson before whistling the Hawks coach for a technical foul. After Nowitzki hit the ensuing free throw that cut the Atlanta lead to 97-96, Joe Johnson missed a jumper before Kidd drained a 3-pointer that put Dallas ahead 99-97. But a Josh Smith layup with 32 seconds left in regulation would tie things up at 99 and send the game into overtime.
The Hawks would miss its first eight shots of overtime before Smith’s layup cut the Mavericks’ lead to 108-103 with 30 seconds remaining in OT, but a three-point play by Brendan Haywood with 24 seconds left iced the game for Dallas.
Nowitzki led the Mavericks with a game-high 37 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and a block while Kidd added 19 (including 4 treys) with 16 rebounds, 17 assists and 2 steals; Jason Terry chipped in 17 with 3 rebounds and 6 assists while Haywood notched a double-double, scoring 11 with 11 rebounds.
Johnson led the Hawks with 27 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists, a steal and a block while Smith and Crawford each added 18 – with Smith grabbing 11 rebounds, dishing out 8 assists along with 7 steals and a block while Crawford grabbed 3 boards and dishing out 4 assists. Mike Bibby chipped in 16 (including four 3-pointers) with 3 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal.
Dallas (38-21) plays again on Sunday when they host the New Orleans Hornets while Atlanta (36-21) remains at home to host the Milwaukee Bucks – also on Sunday night.
