Saturday night wasn’t exactly the best of nights for the San Antonio Spurs in their game against the Memphis Grizzlies at the FedEx Forum.
While they did shoot well, got balanced scoring as six Spurs scored in double-digits and did defeat Memphis 102-92, they paid a heavy price for the victory. Tony Parker broke a bone in his right hand at the end of the first half; according to coach Gregg Popovich, Parker should be out around six weeks or so.
The Spurs shot 55 percent in the first half and overcame an early deficit with a 20-4 run to open the second quarter. They would continue to pad their advantage as Matt Bonner drained a trio of three-pointers; San Antonio’s defense came to the forefront as they caused Memphis to turn the ball over 12 times in the first half as the Spur sled 58-48 at intermission; Richard Jefferson had 12 during the half while Tim Duncan and Bonner scored 10 each.
The Grizzlies chipped into the Spurs’ lead in the third quarter, but San Antonio would hold a 78-72 edge going into the fourth quarter. Memphis would get to within 91-85 with 5:36 remaining, but the Spurs scored the next seven points to up their lead into double-digits. From that point until the final horn, both teams would trade baskets.
Jefferson came off the bench to lead all Spurs scorers with 18 points, 6 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block while Duncan and Manu Ginobili each scored 17 – with Duncan grabbing 4 rebounds, dishing out 2 assists, along with 2 steals while Ginobili grabbed a board, dished out 6 assists, along with a steal.
O.J. Mayo led the Grizzlies with 23 points, 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal while Marc Gasol added 17 with 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals; Zach Randolph chipped in 15 with 7 rebounds.
San Antonio (36-24) plays again on Monday when they travel to Cleveland to take on the Cavaliers while Memphis (32-31) remains at home to host the New Jersey Nets – also on Sunday.
