With the possibility of having the NBA’s worst record erased from their memories, the New Jersey Nets had the dubious responsibility of hosting the Phoenix Suns and hoping to defeat them.
Because this is the Nets, I think we know what the end result here is going to be. Nonetheless, Steve Nash and Jason Richardson combined for 47 points, leading Phoenix to the fairly easy 116-105 win over New Jersey at Izod Center Wednesday night.
Trailing by three, the Suns scored the first 13 points of the third quarter; Richardson, Nash and Richardson again connected on consecutive three-pointers during the run, which gave Phoenix a 63-53 lead. Jared Dudley hit a pair of treys late in the period, the second one increasing the Suns’ advantage to 15 before they took an 88 76 lead into the final period. Phoenix would cruise to the victory in the final 12 minutes.
Nash led the Suns with 24 points (including 3 three-pointers), 7 rebounds and 14 assists while Richardson chipped in 23 (including three treys) with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block; Amare Stoudemire added 15 with 4 rebounds and a steal.
Terrence Williams led the Nets from off the bench with 21 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists and a block while Brook Lopez added 19 with 8 rebounds, 2 assists and a block; Courtney Lee and Kris Humphries chipped in 17 each – with Lee grabbing 5 rebounds, dishing out 3 assists, along with a steal while Humphries grabbed 7 rebounds and blocked 2 shots.
Phoenix (49-26) plays again on Friday when they fly west to Detroit to take on the Pistons while New Jersey (10-65) remains home to host the New Orleans Hornets Saturday night.
