Pure and simple, the game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz could have easily been confused with a track meet as both teams attempted 184 shots and shot 50 percent or better.
Kevin Durant got his points, 45 of them to be exact, but unfortunately for him, they’d go to waste as Deron Williams nearly matched him (a career-high 42 points) and would hit the go-ahead basket with 1.1 seconds left in overtime, allowing Utah to outlast Oklahoma City 140-139 at Energy Solutions Arena.
After Williams hit a three-pointer to break a 135-all tie with 49 seconds left in overtime, Durant drew a foul and made both free throws with 43 seconds remaining; the Thunder would then grab a rebound on a missed Williams jumper with 14.5 seconds left to go.
After a timeout, the Jazz’ C.J. Miles nearly pressured Durant into a turnover, but he was able to flip the ball to Jeff Green, who would drive for the layup, giving the Thunder the lead at 139-138. Utah called a timeout and set up a play for Williams, who swished the game-winner with just 1.1 seconds left.
Speaking of Williams, he led the Jazz with a career-high 42 points (including 4 three-pointers), 3 rebounds and 10 assists while Carlos Boozer added 28 with 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals; Mehmet Okur chipped in 20 (including three treys) with 7 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal while Miles poured in 16 with 2 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block. Paul Millsap came off the bench to score 15 with 7 rebounds and a block.
The Thunder was led by Kevin Durant with a game-high 45 points (including 7 three-pointers), 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks while Russell Westbrook added 27 with 5 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 blocks while turning over the ball 7 times; Green chipped in 20 with 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks while James Harden came off the bench to score 15 with 4 rebounds and a steal.
Utah (51-27) plays again on Wednesday when they fly to Houston to take on the Rockets while Oklahoma City (48-29) returns home to host the Denver Nuggets – also on Wednesday night.
