A three-way deal is being reported by Yahoo! Sports in which three teams – Phoenix, Toronto and Charlotte – are involved in a somewhat complicated, blockbuster deal.
Here is how the deal looks:
- Tyson Chandler would be dealt from the Charlotte Bobcats to the Toronto Raptors.
- The Phoenix Suns would receive Hedo Turkoglu from the Raptors, sending Leandro Barbosa to Toronto.
- Charlotte could send Boris Diaw and Chandler to the Raptors for Jose Calderon while Raptors forward Reggie Evans could go to Charlotte as part of the deal.
Already, the Suns have signed Josh Childress, formerly of the Atlanta Hawks, in a sign-and-trade deal; Childress will receive a five-year, $34 million deal.
Turkoglu leaving the Raptors isn’t really a shock as he was somewhat a pain in the team’s posterior, with his underwhelming season and an incident in which Turkoglu missed a game, claiming he was sick when in fact, he was caught at a nightclub the same night. He would subsequently get suspended.
Finances also came into play with some of the players, as well. Turkoglu has four years and $43 million left on his current contract and will give up a $5 million trade kicker to go to the Suns.
Meanwhile, Calderon has three years and nearly $30 million remaining on his contract while Chandler is in the final year of his contract (valued at $12.8 million). Barbosa has two years and $14.7 million remaining on his current deal. Diaw’s financials are not known as of this posting.
At first glance, it looks like all three teams got what they wanted, with Charlotte getting a more than capable point guard to start for them and a fairly decent forward in Turkoglu going to Phoenix. You can safely assume that Barbosa starts at the 1 for Toronto while Chandler is the starting center for the Raptors.
Meanwhile, Charlotte also got some cap space relief by getting rid of Randolph. However, they lack a big man, so perhaps any cap relief they realized will go towards looking for a free agent center.
