Shaq rumors have been a hot topic as of late, as the 18-year vet looks to land on his sixth NBA team. Shaq has been linked to the Heat, Mavericks, Clippers, Hawks and now the Boston Celtics.
A source at “Comcast SportsNet New England” tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that the Celtics “appear to be close” to signing Shaq.
Shaq might have started this rumor himself, when he appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Show on Monday Night. During the interview, Shaq told Kimmel that he wanted to play two more seasons:
“Right now I’m on the 730-day program, which means I have two years left,” said O’Neal. “So I’m going to try to sign with the right team.”
Kimmel asked if the Celtics would be the right team.
“Celtics would be a good program,” said O’Neal.
Asked if Boston would be a good place to go, O’Neal said, “Yes, it would.”
Shaq averaged 12 points and 6.7 rebounds last season for the Cavs, and it’s been said that the Celtics would only be interested if Shaq would accept a role off the bench. If Shaq does sign with the Celtics, that should give the reining Eastern Conference Champions a very strong front court after already signing Jermaine O’Neal and hopefully getting a healthy Kendrick Perkins back in the near future.
