Kahn Says Timberwolves Transformation Nearly Complete

It isn’t every day when a NBA team executive personally sends out a letter to its season ticketholders, yet that is exactly what Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn did on Tuesday, according to the Pioneer Press.

In the three-page missive, there were some lowlights highlights:

“I believe we now have a collection of talent that could form most of a core nucleus that has its best days ahead.”

“We have added several pieces to our ballclub — perimeter shooting, athleticism and length. The reality is, we are still lacking a dominant player — our version of Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade or Kevin Durant — and that will remain an item at the top of the to-do list.”

And:

“We felt the time was right to trade Al. We will miss Al. Kurt and I want this team to run and flow into a halfcourt offense that features passing and ball movement — with all five players capable of making plays for others. Though capable of playing in this offense, it doesn’t play well to Al’s strengths. Most important, Al would have impacted the playing time of Love, Milicic, Pekovic (and, as it developed, Beasley).”

Let’s see here. The Timberwolves have acquired Wesley Johnson from the 2010 draft, Michael Beasley, Anthony Tolliver, Martell Webster, Luke Ridnour and Nikola Petrovic.

In my estimation, that is a weird mixture of talent for the T-Wolves; one in which making the playoffs does not seem very likely. Only two players on this squad pique my interest: Kevin Love and Jonny Flynn. The others? Not so much.

It is hard for me to comprehend some of the personnel moves by Kahn, who by the way once worked as a newpaper sportswriter for the Portland Oregonian.

While it is true that all 30 teams in the NBA start at 0-0 and it is an even playing field, the moves made by Timberwolves upper management, namely Kahn, will prove yet again why the team is the laughingstock of the Association.

But to be fair here, Isiah Thomas used to work for the New York Knicks. But I digress. And to think that it took a three-page letter to the Minnesota season ticketholders for Kahn to plead his case.

David, no explanation is necessary as to the reasoning for your personnel moves. As in previous seasons, the team ensured themselves of no playoffs well ahead of schedule, and this roster you’ve cobbled together will, at best, perhaps leave the basement and at worst do what they do best – finish in last place and ensure a seat at the next NBA lottery.

By the way, if you’re into comedy and unsound reasoning by a NBA executive, then you will want to read Kahn’s letter to the T-Wolves’ season ticketholders – it’s a doozy. To read the letter in its entirety, click here.
