Sixers Coach Battling Concussion

Athletes of most, if not all, professional sports have suffered either a concussion or concussion-like symptoms during their career.

But it is the very rare occurrence when a coach suffers a concussion. Because most coaches have played the sport that they coach, they still think that they are invinceable, regardless of the injury in question.

The Philadelphia 76ers have an employee that is currently suffering from a concussion. No, it is not one of the 15 players on the team roster. And no, it isn’t anyone within the front office. The victim in this instance is none other than Doug Collins, according to Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News.

Collins apparently suffered the concussion when he slipped and fell in a coffee shop on Memorial Day.

At a meeting with his assistant coaches on Tuesday morning in preparation for Tuesday night’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Collins revealed that he needed to return to Philadelphia to get the problem checked out; he subsequently landed in Philly and had a neurological appointment at Laneknau Hospital.

Assistant coach Michael Curry took over Collins’ spot as the 76ers lost to the Cavaliers 111-95.

According to Curry:

“He told us this morning, he hadn’t said anything before. Hopefully they’ll run the tests and hopefully he’ll be good. I haven’t noticed any difference. We’ve been meeting a lot and going over a lot of things in preparation for these next two games and for the start of the season. We’ve been together a lot and spent a lot of hours together. I haven’t seen anything different.”

Collins’ availability for Wednesday’s – and the team’s final – preseason game in in question; with his concussion symptoms, I would suspect that he will sit this one out, as well.

Interestingly enough, 76ers president Rod Thorn did not find out about Collins’ injury until Tuesday. I hope for the team’s sake that they have a Plan B in the very real possibility that Collins will have to miss some games because of the concussion.
