Blake Griffin is an NBA player that is hard to believe is even real. Every time that Griffin takes the court it’s something new and exciting, and the most amazing part is that he has totally turned around the Los Angeles Clippers. Griffin has taken the Clippers under his power, and has managed to make them contenders again. Even though the season is not over, it seems to be that Griffin is now the clear candidate for Rookie of the Year.
Even though Griffin was a 2009 draft pick, he went down in the last game of the Clippers preseason and was injured for the entire season. Because Griffin did not participate in any of the Clippers regular season games, that makes him eligible to win the award, being that 2010 is his actual rookie year.
Just watching Griffin shows that he will be an elite player in the NBA, everything from his rebounding ability to his wicked dunks. Griffin is only in his rookie season and he is simply blowing his competition away, and is just the better player in most match ups. There is essentially no way to guard the young power forward, as he just makes plays. When players try and block his path to the basket, he just dunks over their heads. On defense he boxes out almost any opponent and has a great feel for the ball on rebounds.
Here are Griffin’s 2010 stats:
PPG: 22.5
Rebounds: 12.8
Assists: 3.4
Minutes Per Game: 37.3
The kid is averaging a double-double a game. This is just insane. When a rookie PF is averaging a double-double a game, in the Western Conference, this deserves some serious recognition. Griffin is not only out scoring most players, he is also out rebounding them. Griffin can just do it all, and there is no one that can seem to slow this kid down. He is even breaking rookie records, as he posted 47 points and 19 rebounds against the Indiana Pacers earlier this week.
Griffin’s best quality is his dunking. This is a threat every time he touches the ball, as he can dunk over anyone at any time. I think that the case could be made that he is now one of the top dunkers in the NBA, and that he is can hang with the best of them. He just takes the pass and just heads like a train to the rim, and launches like a jet, then proceeds to slam the dunk over whoever happens to be standing in the way. It’s not only motivating, but it’s awesome to watch. Maybe the Staples Center will be selling some more tickets?
It’s hard to think of many rookies who have had more of a positive impact on their team’s performance than Griffin on the Clippers. Every time Griffin is on the court, it looks like the Clippers are an entirely different team. This season the Clippers may still have a losing record, but they have downed some of the best teams in the NBA, defeating the Lakers and the Heat in the same week. Griffin scored a combined 42 points and 29 rebounds against the two teams.
Before this season started there were several names being tossed around for possible RoY candidates, John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Derek Favors, and Blake Griffin. Griffin was always the last named mentioned. It’s not that the other players haven’t been great for their teams, it’s more that Griffin is above all of them. In every single way, Griffin has outperformed every rookie in the NBA, and has exceeded expectations.
Who knows, maybe in Los Angeles there will be more Griffin jerseys than Kobe jerseys soon?
