The Golden State Warriors, other than getting the prerequisite media coverage, have for the most part flown under the radar. And that is rather interesting considering that they were on a timely, three-game winning streak prior to hosting the Sacramento Kings at Oracle Arena Friday night.
For 48 minutes, both teams battled, with the end result being an extra 5 minutes of basketball.
Despite 35 points from Tyreke Evans, Golden State got a strong effort from Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis as they combined for 62 points while outlasting Sacramento 119-112.
The first half was tightly contested as the Kings outscored the Warriors 28-27 while Golden State outscored Sacramento by one, knotting the game up at 51-all as both teams went to their respective locker rooms at the break.
Fast forwarding to the fourth quarter, the Kings seemed to have the game under control with a 99-90 lead. But Curry drained a three-pointer and then converted a three-point play.
Dorell Wright followed with a layup and David Lee’s free throw tied the game at 99 with about 2 minutes left in regulation. Tyreke Evans’ jumper gave Sacramento the lead, but Ellis would take over as he made a trey then would make a jumper over Evans with 0.9 seconds left, sending the game into overtime.
Ellis sealed the win in the extra period for the Warriors with some early free throws.
Curry led the Warriors with 34 points (including 3 three-pointers), along with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals while Ellis poured in 28 with 4 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals and a block but also turned the ball over 7 times. Lee added 22 with 10 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal while Wright earned a double-double, scoring 13 with 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block.
Evans led the Kings with a game-high 35 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals but committing 6 turnovers while DeMarcus Cousins added 21 with 8 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal and a block. Omri Casspi chipped in 14 with 9 rebounds and 2 assists while Jason Thompson earned a double-double, scoring 12 with 12 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block.
Golden State (19-23) plays again on Saturday when they fly south to Los Angeles to face the Clippers while Sacramento (8-28) travels north to Portland to take on the Trail Blazers on Monday night.
