The Detroit Pistons, safely out of the Eastern Conference playoff chase, had a game to play on Wednesday night as they hosted the Indana Pacers at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
As improbable as it sounds, the Pistons and Pacers may have played arguably the game of the night as Detroit had control of the game for most of regulation, but let it slip away late in the fourth, sending the contest into overtime.
But Tayshaun Prince’s dunk with 1:34 left in the extra period allowed the Pistons to go into the All-Star break victorious with a 115-109 win over the Pacers.
Detroit was scorching in the first quarter, making 64 percent of their shots and taking a 33-22 lead and shot even better in the second quarter while going to their locker room with a 60-55 lead.
The game went back and forth in the second half, with the Pistons holding a 12-point lead and had a 92-82 lead in the fourth. The Pacers rallied late, tying the contest. Prince had a chance to win the game in regulation, but the shot he tried to make was way off the mark, ending the game into overtime.
Detroit regrouped in the extra period, outscoring Indiana 11-5, capped by a Prince dunk with 1:34 left, sealing the win.
Prince led the Pistons with 25 points, along with 11 rebounds and 2 assists while Rodney Stuckey added 18 with 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Ben Gordon came off the bench to score 16 with a rebound, 2 assists and a steal while Tracy McGrady chipped in 15 with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Pacers were led by Roy Hibbert who tied a career-high wth 29 points, along with 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks while Danny Granger added 28 with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Josh McRoberts notched a double-double, scoring 15 with 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Both teams return to action next Tuesday as Detroit (21-36) remains at home to host the Houston Rockets while Indiana (24-30) flies to Washington, D.C. to take on the Wizards.
