For one night, the Miami Heat can say that they defeated the Boston Celtics at something – even if it didn’t involve a game clock and 48 minutes on the hardwood.
James Jones, the Heat’s resident 3-point specialist, made five straight shots from beyond the arc in the final round and manazged to hold off the Celtics’ Paul Pierce and Ray Allen to win the 2011 Foot Locker 3-Point Contest.
Allen led the first round with 20 points, but Jones was right behind him with 16 points; meanwhile, Pierce scored 12, pushing him past the Golden State Warriors’ Dorell Wright with his last money ball.
The Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant was eliminated early, scoring a woeful six points, making just 5-of-25 shots.
In the final round, Jones drained four of the five money balls worth two points, making 16-of-25 shots overall. Pierce scored 18, but missed his final money ball which could have tied it; Allen was eliminated before he even reached the final rack despite scoring 15 points.
