Curry Outclasses Westbrook, Wins Skills Challenge

Usually with most activities that take place during the NBA All-Star Weekend, there is usually only one winner – the Slam Dunk contest and the NBA All-Star game.

This year, the 2011 Taco Bell Skills Challenge would have two winners; I’ll go into more detail about the second winner in just a bit.

Five dynamic point guards – Chris Paul, Stephen Curry, Derrick Rose, John Wall and Russell Westbrook – were the participants in this year’s Skills Challenge.

With speed being the prime ingredient in addition to top-notch ballhandling skills, any of the aforementioned could have have won this year’s Skills Challenge.

As it would turn out, Curry would overwhelm Russell Westbrook with a sub-30 second score in winning the Skills Challenge.

Westbrook had no problems advancing to the second round, but struggled in the second with a 28.2 time posted by Curry; Curry incidentally had a 34.1 time in the first round.

Westbrook’s fate was sealed as he posted a “slow” 44.2, which was riddled with missed bounce passes, jump shots and three tries to complete the course’s outlet pass.

Rose, Wall  and Paul finished with times of 35.7, 39.3 and 42.7 seconds, respectively.

Now, about the second winner. Taco Bell, the corporate sponsor of the Skills Challenge, awarded a $30,000 college scholarship to a student who would be matched with a Skills Challenge participant. Because Curry won the Challenge, he earned a scholarship for a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Southern California.
