A Stunning Turn Of Events Has Williams Landing In The East Coast
Devin Harris Was Already On His Way Out; So It Was Just A Matter Of The Nets Finding A Third Squad (Golden State Warriors) To Bring More Ammunition (Draft Considerations) To The Table, So In The End It Came Down To This: Swapping Unknown Potential (Favors) For Proven All-NBA Production (Williams).
According to The Salt Lake Tribune, the Nets will send Derrick Favors (pulled out of practice today), Devin Harris, two first round draft picks (New Jersey’s 2011, Golden State’s 2012) and $3 million in cash to Utah for All-Star point guard Deron Williams.
The deal is scheduled for completion later Wednesday, after a trade call with the league office.
Earlier this week, sources from ESPN said the Dallas Mavericks turned down a Nets offer of Harris for Caron Butler, Mavs rookie shooting guard Dominique Jones and a first round pick.
The former member of the Fighting Illini, Williams, was drafted 3rd overall in the 2005 NBA Draft. In his sixth year in the Association, an All-Star the past two seasons, the 26-year-old floor general is averaging a career-best 21.3 points and 9.7 dimes per game.
Update – From ESPN’s NBA analyst Marc Stein: “Deron Williams told me it was not his choice as far as NBA picks go. He’s stunned. Declined interview until he figures out what it all means.”
Looking Ahead: Could the dealing of Williams indicate the Jazz will select BYU’s sharpshooting assassin, Jimmer Fredette, in this year’s draft, with the 1st rounder they received from the Nets? Hometown kid, sounds very intriguing.
As for the Warriors, the third wheel to this three-way deal, they will acquire the expiring contract of Troy Murphy; who will likely be bought out (Orlando, a rumored place), while moving Dan Gadzuric and former 1st round pick Brandan Wright to New Jersey -according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard.
