The Washington Wizards were the lucky hosts of the Miami Heat, after LeBron James had come fresh off of a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and tempers were a bit high during the game. In an incident that occurred in the second quarter, John Wall and Zydrunas Ilgauskas exchanged an elbow and a fist to the stomach. It seems as if Ilgauskas elbowed Wall in the head, and Wall responded with a shot straight to the stomach of Ilgauskas.
Whether the elbow was intentional is unknown, but the NBA does not have much sympathy either way, as Wall has now been suspended for one game without pay. Ilgauskas has been $25,000 for his involvement in the incident with Wall, and also for making an obscene gesture when he was ejected from the game. In addition to the two already being fined and suspended, David Stern has also handed Juwan Howard $35,000 in fines, due to his escalation of the altercation.
Luckily for both teams, the suspension and fines mean nothing to the conclusion of the season. The Wizards are long out of playoff contention, and one game without Wall will not hurt their record in the long-run, as they take on the Cavaliers in their next game. As far as the fines, it does nothing to the Heat except hurt the bank accounts of Ilgauskas and Howard, as neither were suspended for their actions.
This was nothing serious, and is only a small smudge on the promising career that Wall has ahead of him with the Wizards.
