The Cleveland Cavaliers and their opponent on Wednesday night, the Washington Wizards, parallel each other in terms of the youth, inexperience and their future upside. Granted, the way they went about trying to rebuild their respective squads were different, but the end result for both teams was identical.
The Cavaliers, despite LeBron James failing on his promise to bring a championship to the team then bolting to Miami, have at least this much: their fanbase remains. Win or lose, they have remained true – which is more than you can say about teams in the National Basketball Association with better win-loss records.
Speaking of the Cavs and Wizards, both played their final game of the 2010-11 campaign Wednesday night at Quicken Loans Arena and was a game of peaks and valleys as several leads were exchanged. But Ramon Sessions scored five straight points and Anthony Parker drained a 3-pointer with just over 90 seconds left, giving Cleveland the 100-93 decision over Washington, ensuring the Cavs of not having the worst record in the Association.
The Wizards started out strong in the first quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers 35-23 while Cleveland outscored Washington by nine and going to their locker room down 50-47 at the intermission.
Washington took their final lead of the game at 87-86 on a basket by Yi Jianlian, but Sessions scored five straight points and Parker made a trey wth 1:34 left in the game, sealing the win for Cleveland.
Sessions led the Cavaliers with 27 points, along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists while J.J. Hickson added 15 with 13 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Ryan Hollins chipped in 12 with 6 rebounds, an assist and 2 blocks.
The Wizards were led by Andray Blatche with 20 points, along with 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals while Maurice Evans added 15 with an assist and 2 steals. Jianlian earned a double-double, scoring 10 with 12 rebounds and a block.
Cleveland finishes up their season at 19-63 while Washington limps home with a record of 23-59.
