Was Heat’s Opening Act Against Celtics A Mirage?

Game One Illusion?

There’s a phrase in sports that’s gotten very popular in the NBA lately, that a series doesn’t start until someone wins a road game.

So, good news for Celtics fans: the Miami Heat-Boston Celtics playoff series hasn’t even begun.

More good news for concerned fans who saw their team get man-handled is, the game wasn’t as bad as it seemed. The Celtics actually outscored the Heat by 6 in the second half, and as Russ detailed, the reason the Heat played so well in the first half is because James Jones absolutely went off. Before he entered the game the Heat were up by 1, but propelled by his 4 first half three’s they entered half time with a 15 point lead.

That isn’t going to happen every game, for a couple reasons. One, simply because Jones isn’t a 71% three-point shooter. He shot 43% in the regular season. Two, because the Celtics will adapt to the matchup problems he caused; finding a way to rotate more effectively.

This game did tell us a few important things about the series.
