Next Step: Most Valuable Player?
Clippers phenom Blake Griffin will be awarded the NBA’s Rookie of the Year on Wednesday, this coming from an undisclosed league source.
The team on Tuesday announced a meeting for the presentation of a prestigious NBA award. All signs point towards Blake bringing home the shiny stuff.
“The Elevator” averaged 22.5 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists, and became the first rook to see action in an All-Star Game since Yao in 2003. On top of that, Blake won the slam dunk contest in one of the most entertaining performances of all-time.
Griffin was honored the Western Conference’s Rookie of the Month a stunning six times, becoming the first player to sweep that department since Chris Paul produced the feat with New Orleans in 2005-06. Encore.
Categorized as a crowd-pleaser, the high-rising power forward tallied an astounding 63 double-doubles this season with the Clippers. A machine I tell you!
The former Oklahoma Sooner was the NBA’s fourth-leading rebounder and the 12th-leading scorer. After missing all of last season, Blake did not miss a single contest during his rookie campaign. He joins David Robinson (’89-90), Larry Bird (’79-80), and Jerry Lucas (’63-64) as the only players to win ROY after not playing the year they were drafted.
According to the Clips head coach Vinny Del Negro, a vote for Blake revealed someone watched their basketball this year. “If someone doesn’t vote for Blake, they haven’t watched a lot of basketball.” You didn’t have to watch a lot of basketball, or even watch closely for that matter, to know that Blake Griffin is well-worthy and extremely deserving of Rookie of the Year.
