New Jersey Nets center Brook Lopez is expected to return to game action in six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery Friday to repair a non-displaced stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal of the right foot, the team announced.
“A single screw was inserted into the bone to stabilize the fracture and speed up the healing process,” foot specialist Dr. Martin O’Malley, who performed the procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, said in a statement.
“He was placed in a boot and will walk with the aid of crutches. Brook will begin his rehab in two weeks.”
Star point guard Deron Williams knows it’s a big loss for the Nets.
“It’s definitely devastating,” Williams said Thursday. “Brook’s a big part of our team. But there’s one thing you learn in this business — you can’t control injuries. From what I understand, it’s not that severe, so hopefully he’ll be on the court soon.”
Guard Added: Along with trading for Jazz center Mehmet Okur, the Nets signed veteran shooting guard DeShawn Stevenson to a one-year, $2.5 million deal. Stevenson, 30, was on the Mavericks roster last season.
