Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook went 0 for 13 shooting in last night’s 98-95 win at Memphis.
Yet, that wasn’t the main attention-grabbing headline stemming from Westbrook and the Thunder in their Western Conference Semifinals rematch with the Grizzlies.
It was instead Westbrook letting his emotions get the best of him Wednesday night — leading to a heated exchange with Kevin Durant on the bench during a second-quarter timeout.
It all started with Westbrook’s displeasure with teammate Thabo Sefolosha, who the young guard found with just 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the second quarter, penetrating into the paint and passing the ball to Sefolosha in the corner.
Sefolosha proceeded to pass up his wide open 3-point shot setup by Westbrook, which elicited the UCLA product to yell at Sefolosha, “shoot the (expletive) ball.”
After Kendrick Perkins, Kevin Durant, and Sefolosha confronted Westbrook on the next trip down at the free-throw line — Durant reached out to Russell again in an attempt to settle the three-year pro down.
The former Bruin took offense to Durant’s “big brother” effort and the two had to be separated from each after a shouting match.
However, the discontent between the pair of All-Star players was short lived, as Durant patted Westbrook on the head when the two took the court out of the timeout — and the two seemed to communicate well throughout the rest of the game.
“We’re going to disagree sometimes, like I’ve always been saying,” Durant said. “But I’m behind him 110 percent, and he’s the same way with me. And you seen when we came on the floor we clicked and everything started to work from there.”
Durant finished the game with 32 points — his third straight 30-plus scoring night to start the season.
