Deng Will Play For Great Britain In Euro Championship Series
Filed Under Euro-League | Leave a Comment
The “Associated Press” reported Saturday that Chicago Bulls small forward Luol Deng will be on the team from Great Britain that will play in the European Championship qualifying games starting next week. Great Britain will face Israel in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, and then take on the Czech Republic next Saturday, in a game to be played in London. Getting Deng was costly for the British though, as they had to get extra insurance for the player in order for the NBA to give it’s permission. British Basketball performance director Chris Spice (is this basketball, or the ballet?) could not understand why the NBA demanded the extra coverage. Chris, it probably had a bit to do with the fact that Deng just signed a long term deal with the Bulls reportedly worth up to $80 million. Deng was born in the Sudan but came to London as a child to escape the violence.

Italian Coach Says Kemp Could Be “Key Player” For His Team
Filed Under Euro-League, NBA Free Agents | Leave a Comment
ESPN.com reported Sunday that Italian team Premiata Montegranaro made public Sunday that they have signed a well known former NBA player. The team’s head coach Alessandro Finelli told reporters that the team has signed 38 year old former All-Star Shawn Kemp. Kemp has not played since the 2002-2003 campaign with the Orlando Magic. Kemp was at one time one of the most dominant players in the Association, but inner demons quickly diminished his skills. Kemp averaged 20.5 points per game for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1998-1999 strike shortened season. In his last campaign with the Magic he averaged 6.8 points per contest. Kemp went from looking like he was chiseled out of granite to a bloated man who got old far beyond his time.
Finelli told reporters “I am happy that a player that has made basketball history would come to Montegranaro! He is very motivated. And he has been staying in shape to show up at our camp in good shape. We will discover with work in the gym if he will be a key player for our team. Now, it’s too soon to say that.”

Boykins Now Ninth NBA Player To Head To Euro-League
Filed Under Euro-League, NBA Free Agents | Leave a Comment
“ESPN.com” reported Wednesday that free agent veteran guard Earl Boykins has become the ninth former NBA player to sign overseas since July 1. The much traveled point guard has signed a one year deal to play for Virtus Bologna, reportedly for over $3.5 million. The report states it would make Boykins the highest paid player in Italy.
Boykins has spent ten years playing in the Association, and has played for eight different teams. His greatest success in the NBA came at stops with the Denver Nuggets, and the Milwaukee Bucks. Boykins had a guaranteed contract with Milwaukee for this past season in which he would have been paid $3 million, but took the opt-out clause. He did not sign with a team until December, when he signed with the Charlotte Bobcats, and played just 36 games. Boykins although only 5′5″ is a consummate pro, and was a tough match-up for many point guards in the NBA.

Arroyo Heads To Israel As He Signs With Maccabi Tel Aviv
Filed Under Euro-League, NBA Free Agents | Leave a Comment
The “Orlando Sentinel” is reporting that restricted free agent Carlos Arroyo has signed a contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel. Arroyo who played with the Orlando Magic this past season reportedly received a deal that could result in a three year pact. There is an opt-out clause for Arroyo after each season, it is reported that he will receive $2.5 million tax free, which is apparently what he would take home from a $5 million contract in the NBA. Arroyo now becomes the eighth former NBA player to spurn the NBA for playing overseas. The guard played for five different teams in a seven year career in the Association. Arroyo averaged 7 points, 3.3 assists.
