Warriors Ink Nelson To Extension

The Golden State Warriors will have some form of continuity as according to the San Jose Mercury News, team head coach Don Nelson agreed to a two-year extension with the team on Saturday; sources stated that the yet-unsigned deal is worth $12 million, with some of the money being deferred.

While the deal is good news for Golden State, it also raises the uncertainty of Warriors vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin’s future with the team as there’s been speculation that he will not be retained after this season.  Nelson has said that he does not want to perform dual roles should Mullin depart the team. 

It is not clear as of this writing how long Nelson wants to coach as he turns 69 in May, but sources have stated that he’s shown no interest in leaving the coaching profession.  Also factor in the outside chance of Nelson surpassing Basketball Hall of Fame member Lenny Wilkens as the winningest coach in NBA history; Nelson also has not won a championship ring in his long coaching career.

Mavericks Name Westphal As V.P. Of Basketball Operations

The “Associated Press” reported Tuesday that the Dallas Mavericks have named Paul Westphal as Vice President of Basketball Operations. Westphal was an assistant coach under former Dallas head coach Avery Johnson last season. Westphal one of the scrappiest players ever to don a NBA uniform was named five times during his playing career to the NBA All-Star team. He was also a key component in the Boston Celtics winning the NBA Championship in 1974. 

Westphal’s duties were described as helping Mavericks General Manager Donnie Nelson, as well as scouting. He had stints as head coach for the Phoenix Suns, the Seattle SuperSonics, as well as at Pepperdine University.
